Reasons to choose i3C Basic IP

The Sensor Working Group created the MIPI Alliance standard known as i3C, which is pronounced: "eye-three-see." The name alludes to the bus's similarity to i2C because it is backwards compatible with i2C and uses the same two-wire SCL and SDA lines. (With some restrictions) You must belong to MIPI in order to receive the complete i3C standard. However, a publicly accessible subset of the full specification called MIPI i3C Basic IP is available for free download from the MIPI Alliance website.

The MIPI Alliance released the i3C standard's first public version, version 1.0, in late 2017. Prior to the formal release of the standard, members of the MIPI Alliance had access to it. MIPI i3C Basic v1.0 was released in October 2018. 2019 saw the release of MIPI i3C v1.1 in December. i3C uses less energy than i2C and offers a quicker bus speed, per the MIPI i3C Basic IP  specification. i3C has a speed advantage over i2C because it can switch from an open-drain to a push-pull drive in some situations. i2C always uses an open-drain drive, which reduces the signal's rising time (the signal is pulled high by a "slow" resistor).i3C can switch from open-drain to push-pull communication after the initial bus arbitration, enabling noticeably quicker communication (up to rates comparable with SPI).

i3C sometimes doesn't require external pull-up resistors; instead, the i3C master offers the pull-up resistors (s). When linked to an i3C bus, i2C devices can communicate at i2C bit rates with i2C and i3C nodes. The standard allows the bit rate to be higher when an i3C node communicates with another i3C node. On an i3C bus, i2C slaves are supported but not i2C masters (the master on an i3C Basic must be an i3C device).
